Modoc County is a pristine region with sparse population, abundant wildlife and wide-open spaces. The county is located in extreme northeastern California, covering a portion of the Shasta Cascade geologic region. Elevation ranges from 3,500 ft. on the Day Bench to 9,934 feet at Eagle Peak in the Warner Mountains.
Two State highways traverse the county; east-west State route (SR) 299 and US 395 running north-south. Another State route (SR 139) extends northwest from its junction with SR 299 at Canby to the Klamath Basin and the Oregon border, where it becomes Oregon Route 39.
