Modoc County Transportation Commission (MCTC) was designated as the Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) in 1972 and serves as the planning and programming authority for transportation projects in the county.
Modoc County is a pristine region with sparse population, abundant wildlife and wide-open spaces. The county is located in extreme northeastern California, covering a portion of the Shasta Cascade geologic region. Elevation ranges from 3,500 ft. on the Day Bench to 9,934 feet at Eagle Peak in the Warner Mountains.
Two State highways traverse the county; east-west State route (SR) 299 and US 395 running north-south. Another State route (SR 139) extends northwest from its junction with SR 299 at Canby to the Klamath Basin and the Oregon border, where it becomes Oregon Route 39.
MCTC is located in the city of Alturas, which is near the center of the region and hosts the county seat. Alturas is 143 miles northeast of Redding, California, 189 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada, and 100 miles southeast of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
The Modoc Transportation Agengy (MTA)oversees Sage Stage, the bus operator for Alturas in-town bus service, and intercity connections to Reno, Redding and Klamath Falls.
